Context

The Lake District, in the north west of Englandis a UNESCO world heritage site, based primarily on its agro-pastoral land use system which is characterized by fields enclosed by walls. It was established as a national park in 1951 and covers an area of 2,362 square kilometres. The region is prone to high levels of average annual rainfall, commonly in excess of 2000mm, and much higher in some localities.

What the owner needed help with

Exhausted land after intensive sheep grazing needed to be regenerated.

The farmer also wanted to transition to cattle farming.

What we did

To enable the plan to allow rotational extensive grazing by cattle, we included the creation of islands of trees and hedges to increase regeneration and biodiversity.

When did the project take place

Winter 2022/2023

Size of the project

12,000 trees in islands, 8000 in hedges and 1500 of naturally home grown oaks.
