Bordeaux - France

Hedge plantation in a historical cru vineyard to buffer from growing urbanization and other vineyards.

BEFORE

WORK IN PROGRESS

Context

It is hard to become organic as the vinification process of ageing the Bordeaux wines requires some hedging against time’s work.

However, the work in the vineyard is done according to organic and regenerative principles, with as little copper and sulphur as possible and continuous cover.

The city of Bordeaux has also grown significantly in the past years, sometimes creating frictions between new urban areas and wine estates.

What the owner needed help with

Restoring soils and biodiversity restoration was needed as the parcels have been monoculture of vine for the past centuries.

As urbanisation is pushing the city into the vines, there was need of a screen to isolate the vineyard from the city and keep it in a natural balanced ecosystem.

What we did

To protect the environment and regenerate it in and around the vines, we devised a plan to increase biodiversity, protect the area from the nearby urbanisation, while preserving the quality of the grapes, and ensuring the resilience and superior quality of the vines in the longer term.

This involved planting hedges, in between parcels and on their edge, planting trees to make alleys or islands (with biodegradable tree guards), while ensuring that the use of wine-making agricultural machinery was not hindered or shade created over the vines, thereby creating a risk of too much fungal activity.

When did the project take place

The trees were planted in January/February 2023

Size of the project

5950 Trees in hedges and islands.
