Cher - France

Afforestation of fallow land to have a buffer vis-à-vis the growing urbanization and financed through Carbon Credit creation

BEFORE

WORK IN PROGRESS

Context

This project was developed in a rural area, close to a dynamic town of the Cher area, where urbanisation is rapid with a new highway exit set to border the land and estate.

What the owner needed help with

A land-owner was looking to turn low-yield agricultural land into a new forest to create a buffer to protect the rest of the land from noise and air pollution.

What we did

We recommended and implemented a comprehensive homogeneous afforestation approach, within the Label Bas Carbone certification, the French national certification system of the ministry of the environment, to finance it.

The focus was on the creation of an easily manageable forest with native varieties of trees, mainly oak, complemented with further diverse varieties (maple, conifer islands, and flowers etc) and with a dense area (hedge) bordering to maximise noise insulation. Paths, allowing view to the nearby cathedral and ornamental trees were added too.

When did the project take place

Trees were planted in winter 2022/2023

Size of the project

6,5ha with medium density: 1800 trees per hectare.

The full cost was financed through a Label Bas Carbone certification and the creation of carbon credits.
